We’re hiring!
Product Intern (Payroll)
The Opportunity
We’re looking for a Product Intern (Payroll) to support the evolution of Lumber’s payroll product — a mission-critical workflow where trust, accuracy, compliance, and great UX matter. This is a 12–16 week internship designed for someone early in their product journey who wants real hands-on experience. You’ll work directly with product leadership, engineering, design, and customer-facing teams to help ship improvements across payroll workflows and supporting platform capabilities. This role is also designed as an intern-to-hire opportunity: if it’s a strong mutual fit, this internship may convert into a full-time product role.
What You’ll Do
Payroll Product Discovery & Customer Understanding
- Join customer calls and internal feedback sessions to understand contractor payroll workflows
- Help map and document real-world payroll processes (timesheets → approvals → payroll run → reporting)
- Identify pain points and opportunities (errors, delays, manual work, usability gaps, compliance risk)
- Research competitor payroll products and industry trends
Support Requirements & Delivery with Engineering
- Help write and refine user stories, acceptance criteria, and edge cases for payroll features
- Maintain and update product documentation (briefs, workflows, PRDs, release notes)
- Work with engineering to clarify requirements, answer questions, and drive follow-through
- Track execution progress and ensure action items close
Quality, Rollout, and Enablement
- Assist with QA testing and validation for payroll flows (including edge cases)
- Help ensure rollout readiness: workflow correctness, usability, and compliance scenarios
- Support internal enablement with clear documentation and release notes
- Gather post-launch feedback and recommend iterative improvements
Data + Feedback → Continuous Improvement
- Track customer feedback, support tickets, and usage patterns related to payroll
- Help define and report on success metrics (adoption, payroll completion rate, error rate, time-to-run payroll)
- Identify friction points and propose improvements backed by evidence
This internship may support initiatives across:
- Payroll run workflow improvements and UX iteration
- Timesheet-to-payroll automation and approval flows
- Pay schedules, overtime rules, and job-based payroll logic
- Compliance workflows and audit trails
- Payroll issue reduction (failed runs, corrections, manual adjustments)
- Reporting and dashboards (payroll summaries, exceptions, labor cost visibility)
What We’re Looking For
You’ll Do Well If You Are:
- Highly organized with strong follow-through
- High work ethic and ownership mindset — you take initiative, move fast, and get things done
- Hungry, scrappy, and proactive — you don’t wait to be told what to do, you find problems and take initiative to solve them
- Curious and eager to learn payroll + FinTech workflows end-to-end
- Comfortable working with engineering teams and asking for clarity
- Strong communicator — able to write clean, structured documentation
- Analytical — can turn messy workflows into clear insights and action
- Customer-oriented and willing to learn directly from real users
- Comfortable in a fast-moving environment with shifting priorities
Why Lumber?
What You’ll Get
- Real ownership: contribute to meaningful payroll product improvements end-to-end
- Mentorship: partner closely with experienced product leaders
- Customer exposure: build product intuition through real workflow discovery
- Engineering partnership: learn how product requirements translate into shipped features
- Intern-to-hire path: opportunity to convert into a full-time product role based on performance and team fit
