Payroll Training Specialist (Part Time)
The Opportunity
As a Payroll Training Specialist, you will help new Lumber customers learn how to run payroll accurately and efficiently in our platform. You’ll bring deep payroll administration experience, ideally in the construction industry, and translate that knowledge into clear, practical training for back-office users. You’ll work closely with Implementation and Customer Success to teach customers how to set up, validate, and run payroll that complies with union rules, prevailing wage requirements, overtime structures, and job-specific pay situations. You will deliver live training, develop repeatable training materials, and support customers as they gain confidence running production payroll. This is a part-time role with flexible hours and light travel (10 to 20 percent) to customer sites when in-person training is the most effective option.
What You’ll Do
- Deliver clear, engaging training sessions that teach new customers how to run payroll in Lumber
- Guide customers through construction-specific payroll situations including unions, prevailing wage, OT rules, shift differentials, deductions, and job costing
- Assess customer readiness for running production payroll and identify where additional coaching is needed
- Partner with Implementation to ensure payroll configuration aligns with customer rules and requirements
- Collaborate with Customer Success to ensure a smooth handoff once customers complete onboarding
- Build and refine training documentation, playbooks, and user resources
- Provide feedback to Product on where training can be simplified through UI improvements or automation
- Serve as a trusted subject matter expert on payroll accuracy, compliance, and best practices
- Travel occasionally (10 to 20 percent) for onsite customer training sessions
What We’re Looking For
- Experienced payroll administrator with deep knowledge of end-to-end payroll processing
- Ideal for recently retired payroll professionals who want flexible, meaningful work helping contractors adopt modern payroll processes.
- Ideally, have construction payroll experience, including unions, certified payroll, fringe benefits, and prevailing wage
- Comfortable teaching and guiding others through complex workflows
- Clear, confident communicator who can translate complexity into simple steps
- Highly organized and able to manage multiple customers and training schedules
- Tech-savvy and capable of learning new software quickly
- Energized by helping customers succeed and gain confidence in a new system
- Open to part-time work with some travel

Requirements
- 3 or more years of payroll administration experience
- Experience running construction payroll strongly preferred
- Familiarity with federal, state, and local payroll regulations
- Ability to work part-time on a flexible schedule
- Ability to travel 10 to 20 percent of the time
