Mandatory Requirements

• Experience: You must have held a Journeyman HVAC Mechanic license for at least two years while working under the supervision and direction of a Master HVAC Contractor.
• Examination: You must pass two examinations administered by Prov Testing Services:
  
  • Master HVAC Contractor Exam: A closed-book exam covering general knowledge, systems and sizing, equipment, piping, refrigeration systems, electrical, maintenance, plan reading, estimating, and math.  
  • Business and Law Exam: Covers relevant regulations, codes, and laws.
  • A minimum score of 70% is required on both exams.
• Insurance: You must provide proof of general liability insurance in the amount of $500,000 or more and property damage insurance of at least $300,000.
• EPA Section 608 Certification: Required for handling refrigerants.
• Age: You must be at least 18 years old.
• Application: You need to complete and submit the Master HVAC Contractor License Application to the DHBC.

How to Get an HVAC Contractor License in Kentucky

Meet Basic Requirements: Be at least 18 years old and hold a high school diploma or GED.‍

Become a Registered Apprentice: Register for a Certificate of Apprenticeship with the DHBC.‍

Gain Journeyman Experience: Complete two years of work experience or a training program and one year of on-the-job training under the direct supervision of a licensed Journeyman HVAC Mechanic and general supervision of a Master HVAC Contractor. Alternatively, complete an HVAC apprenticeship program or gain four years of work experience under a licensed HVAC contractor. An associate's degree or certificate in HVAC technology from an accredited program is also acceptable.  ‍

Obtain Journeyman HVAC Mechanic License: Pass the Journeyman HVAC Mechanic exam.‍

Gain Additional Experience: Work for at least two years as a licensed Journeyman HVAC Mechanic under the supervision and direction of a Master HVAC Contractor.
Apply for Master HVAC Contractor License: Complete and submit the Master HVAC Contractor License Application with the required fees and supporting documentation (passport photo, exam score certificate, proof of insurance, etc.) to the DHBC.‍

Pass Examinations: Schedule and pass both the Master HVAC Contractor Exam and the Business and Law Exam.‍

Provide Proof of Insurance: Submit proof of the required general liability and property damage insurance.‍

Pay Licensing Fees: Pay the applicable application and licensing fees.

Additional Considerations

• Continuing Education: To renew your Master HVAC Contractor license annually, you must complete eight hours of continuing education coursework.
• ‍Reciprocity: Kentucky may have reciprocity agreements with other states; check with the DHBC for details.
  • Local Requirements: Some local jurisdictions may have additional licensing or registration requirements.
